Resumption of Routine Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Administration

The AAP, together with the CDC, ACIP, and AAFP is recommending that, effective immediately, providers resume administration of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7, Prevnar) according to the routine immunization schedule as provided in the Red Book.

A catch-up schedule for incompletely vaccinated children can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr (available at noon on 9/16/04). The highest priority for catch-up vaccination is to ensure that children aged under 5 years at high risk for invasive pneumococcal disease are fully vaccinated. Secondary priorities include vaccination of healthy children under 24 months of age who have not received any doses of PCV7 and vaccination of healthy children under 12 months who have not yet received 3 doses.
